The Medstrap Holster by Patient Shield Concepts looks simple enough, but has an important purpose in infection control and prevention for patients utilizing oral suction devices. Health Care professionals use an oral suction device called a yankauer suction catheter to maintain patients requiring intubation and sedation. This device helps keep the patient’s airway clear of debris and mucus that might affect their breathing during surgical procedures.
Without a device like the Medstrap Holster, the suction catheter is often placed on the surgical floor or under a patient’s pillow. Even worse, the suction catheter is sometimes put back in the plastic sleeve used by the previous patient. These unsanitary practices also occur in Emergency Care and Intensive Care units that require oral suction. All of these practices expose the catheter to contamination by multiple organisms, leading to prolonged infection if entering the patient’s airway.
Studies show that 12% of patients who undergo moderate to high-risk surgical procedures develop hospital-acquired infections. Mortality rates in infected patients have been shown to be 14.5%, compared to 1.8% in uninfected patients. These infections lead to large hospital bills and put patients at unnecessary risk.
Preventing hospital-acquired infections, particularly pneumonia, is important to keep patients safe and to reduce operating expenses. The Medstrap Holster is a simple product that can help prevent the risk of infection through cross-contamination. This orange holder can be strapped to the patient’s bed, wheelchair or wall suction unit giving the patient and caregiver a target return placement for the suction catheter as well as easy access to the catheter when needed. When the patient is finished with surgery or their need for oral suction is over, the healthcare professional should discard the yankauer and the Medstrap Holster.
Clearly, healthcare facilities and professionals should implement effective preventative techniques on behalf of the patient’s safety. It is important for caregivers to take the responsibility to improve the quality of their techniques with regard to prevention of disease transmission. The Medstrap Holster can help provide for patient safety and help improve the quality of care you give to your patients.
